Mechanical engineering is a fundamental engineering discipline forming a basis for industrial and technological development, and widely applied in the design and manufacturing processes of almost all consumer and industrial products. Conventional fields of the mechanical engineering are classified into (1) solid mechanics and materials, (2) thermal and fluid engineering, (3) dynamics and control, and (4) manufacturing and automation. Each of these subfields is applied in various industrial activities including: (1) design and production of various mechanical components and structures, manufacturing machinery; (2) development and automation of manufacturing processes; (3) mechatronics products including robots; (4) development and manufacturing of motor vehicles, watercrafts and aircraft; (5) engines and propulsion systems; (6) heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems; (7) wind turbines, thermal power station and nuclear power plants; and (8) waste-treatment plants such as incinerators.
With the advent of the 21st century, five new technologies - Information Technology (IT), Nanotechnology (NT), Biotechnology (BT), Energy/Environmental Technology (ET) and Space Technology (ST) - draw tremendous attention. Rapid development of Convergence Technology, a synergetic combination of the five new technologies, requires new product design and manufacturing technology. The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Myongji University focuses on training of next generation science/engineering leaders through education and research of the cutting-edge technologies as well as conventional mechanical engineering fields by active adaption of the new fields in curriculum.
Through core classes of our solid curriculum, students will learn (1) analytical skills necessary for solving engineering problems with thorough understanding of basic mathematics and mechanics; (2) application of CAD/CAE (computer-aided design/engineering) to engineering problems; and (3) manufacturing and production processes. The educational goal of our department is to educate creative, collaborative, and practical engineers harnessed with an ability to solve real-life engineering problems, through experiment, hands-on manufacturing and design-project classes as well as the core classes.
